Join NeuroOne In Celebrating Neuroscience Nurses Week, May 10-16, 2020
Honoring neuroscience nurses for their dedication to caring for the nation’s most vulnerable!
Every year during the third week in May, NeuroOne joins the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses (AANN) and other organizations across the country in celebrating Neuroscience Nurses Week (NNW) to honor all nurses who work in the field.
NNW was started to celebrate the nurses who care for the most vulnerable patients and their families. During NNW, AANN thanks its nurses for providing the highest level of quality care to their patients. The week is all about highlighting neuroscience nurses’ influence on patient care to hospital administrators, allied health professionals and the community.
This year is an especially poignant time to honor neuroscience nurses—and all nurses—as the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases continues to accelerate in the United States. Nurses working at the front lines of the health care response have bravely endured challenging and uncharted territory.
General and specialized nursing is more important than ever as these professionals provide compassion and care, screening patients, taking care of the critically ill, implementing triage protocols, communicating to families and attending to the dying.
Neuroscience nurses assist patients with brain and nervous system disorders, working to understand and treat illnesses and injuries that affect the nervous system. They work in diverse, challenging and rewarding environments, such as hospitals, health care clinics, brain injury units and intensive rehabilitation units.
Patients with COVID-19 have experienced neurologic manifestations. In a case series of 214 patients with the virus, neurologic symptoms were seen in 36.4% of patients and were more common in patients with severe infection (45.5%) according to their respiratory status, which included acute cerebrovascular events, impaired consciousness and muscle injury. Research continues to explore the impact of COVID-19 on the nervous system and its long-term effects on brain health.
This special week is about recognizing and celebrating the community of neuroscience nurses, who work diligently throughout the year and dedicate their lives to helping those who need it most.
